European nations, worried about the increasing volume of plastics found in the world’s ocean, have been clamping down. For oil companies that would seemingly pose a dilemma. With countries moving quickly to reduce their reliance on burning fossil fuels to help combat climate change, the industry had planned to pick up the slack by increasing the production of natural gas – cleaner burning than oil – and chemicals, including plastics.
