A longtime energy industry lobbyist and President Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Interior Department appeared in the Senate Thursday to defend his nomination against accusations he would turn U.S. public lands over to fossil fuel companies. David Bernhardt, who served as deputy to former Interior secretary Ryan Zinke, has been a vocal proponent of Trump’s push to expand energy production on federal lands and waters.
